Read A Thon
Hello Roosevelt students, families and staff! Welcome to our first school Read A Thon!

Since Covid is once again making us rethink school events and activities, we thought we could pair our love of reading with a school wide Read A Thon. Here’s how it works:

Each student will receive a reading log (similar to the ones used in school) and a bookmark. Students are encouraged to read or be read to a minimum of 20 minutes per day. We have set up a fundraiser site, similar to the one used for Jump Rope for Heart. Students are encouraged to email the site link to parents, family and friends and have them donate to the Read A Thon. If each student raises $10, we will raise over $4000 for our PTA!!

Dates of the Read A Thon will be Monday, November 1st – Monday, November 29th. All reading logs must be handed in by Wednesday, December 1st. PTA will calculate the reading logs and announce the winners by Friday, December 3rd. The school wide reading challenge is 285,000 minutes and $4000 raised.

The grade level reading challenge is as follows:

JK/SK–70,000 minutes read combined

1st/2nd grade–85,000 minutes read combined

3rd-5th grade–130,000 minutes read combined

The class level reading challenge is as follows:

JK/SK–14,000 minutes per class

1st/2nd grade–14,170 per class

3rd-5th grade-14,450 per class

*If the school wide reading challenge is met, the students will have a school wide pajama day and popcorn party with time set aside to read.

*The grade level with the most reading minutes combined will have extra recess and a treat.

*The class with the most minutes read will receive a free book (up to $12) from the Little Read Book Store in Wauwatosa.

We want to keep this fair and equitable for all students. We will determine the winners for grade level and class level by highest percentage of minutes read over their grade level and class level goals.

This can all be done with the students reading just 20 minutes a day! With book fair books coming, Thanksgiving and holiday travel, it’s a perfect time to read some extra minutes. Encourage your students to set a reading goal for the Read A Thon and reach out to family and friends for sponsors/donations for this event.

Teachers, we want you to get involved too! Your reading minutes count as well as your staff pairing. I will attach the staff pairings in a separate document.

Please reach out with any questions. We hope the students are ready to get reading!
